Community Service Capstone Project: Adulting 101

2021-2022

Tasked to identify a need and create a community service capstone project, I lead the coordination of the annual “Adulting 101” Day at my high school. I wanted to come up with a sustainable project that would last in its relevance and impact. This project included the entire high school attending different workshops lead by community professionals that related to a skill or knowledge that would be useful outside of the high school curriculum.

Process:

  • Created the idea and brainstormed logistics

  • Communicated with upper-level administration to gain approval of the project and dates

  • Presented a presentation to the entire high school staff to prepare them each to play a role the day of the event whether that be by leading groups to classes or instructing a workshop

  • Contacted community professionals or other professional connections to solidify credible instructors for the event

  • Created a schedule and room chart for 16 different workshops

  • Organized the student body in 4 groups for each grade level and a rotation for each group to follow throughout the day

  • Prepared each room for the day of with anything requested by the instructors

  • Recruited Chapter FFA Officers to assist in greeting the guest instructors the day of, and leading them to their designated classroom

  • Spent the day of the event prepared to adapt should any obstacles arise

  • Conducted a survey for feedback after the event for both students and staff members to create points of interest for following years

  • Transferred all documents and information to the staff member who would be taking over the event after I graduated

Outcome:

  • I learned how to effectively work with professionals from many different backgrounds and locations to coordinate instructors

  • Through feedback, students found the event to be relative and useful in life, especially after college

  • I gained confidence in my ability to coordinate an event and see it come to fruition

  • Extended network of professionals to consider mentors in my future career

  • Impacted the community and has been upheld since the first event
